According to AASTMT’s Sustainable-Use and Restoration policy under SDG 15, the Academy commits to “community engagement” to conserve terrestrial biodiversity: “Engage in community outreach programs … with local communities … to implement projects that address environmental challenges. This not only benefits their environment but also serves as a model for other institutions and communities.
The UniGreen Project, led by AASTMT and funded by the European Union, promotes sustainable land management, biodiversity conservation, and climate adaptation through environmental education and community engagement. The UniGreen Bootcamp united universities and NGOs to develop green entrepreneurship solutions for ecosystem protection and land restoration. Partnering with Egyptian universities and the Life Makers Foundation, the project fosters innovation and community-driven approaches to reduce land degradation and enhance sustainable use of terrestrial resources.

AASTMT lists a project called AgriCan: High-Tech Solutions for Sustainable Agriculture and Land Management. According to their SDG-15 projects AgriCan uses AI, machine learning, and smart technologies to help farmers “protect biodiversity, maintain healthy ecosystems, and optimize crop yields. This is about sustainable land use, conserving soil health, and preventing degradation via smart agriculture.

The conference reflects AASTMT’s strong strategic commitment to advancing Egypt’s water and sanitation sector by promoting localization of technology, sustainability, and research-driven solutions. Through its participation as a “gold sponsor,” AASTMT positioned itself at the heart of discussions on the safe reuse of treated sewage water, advanced treatment of industrial effluents (metals, salts, industrial wastes), and the upgrade of infrastructure using sustainable materials. The event also emphasized capacity-building via training, human resource development, and leveraging European-Egyptian partnerships.

AASTMT has participated in the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, via an “Engineering & Technology Forum” titled “Towards a Green and Sustainable Future. the integration of green engineering and sustainable land practices often go together.

In Alexandria, Egypt - 30 June 2025 - Representatives from 15 Arab states, regional organizations, and international partners convened from 28 to 30 June at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) in Abu Qir for the First Coordination Meeting of the Arab Programme for Reducing Marine Disasters. Organized under the auspices of the League of Arab States, hosted by AASTMT, and with active participation and facilitation by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, Regional Office for the Arab States (UNDRR ROAS).

On 1 Nov 2025 (announcement) a cooperation protocol between AASTMT and the Ministry of Housing, Utilities & Urban Communities focused on sustainable urban & coastal resource management in New Alamein City—this involves shared land and coastal ecosystems and shows collaboration across land‑ecosystem contexts.

Through a range of academic and extracurricular endeavors, AASTMT has been eager to play a significant role in the field of social responsibility with the goal of influencing positive development in the social, economic, and environmental spheres not only in the region and the Arab World but also with global implications.

On August 23, 2023, Professor Dr. Ismail Abdel Ghaffar Ismail Farag, President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), hosted a delegation from the Arab Union for Sustainable Development and Environment at the Academy’s headquarters in Abu Qir. The meeting brought together senior officials from both AASTMT and the Union to discuss collaboration on research and training focused on environmental conservation and sustainable development in the Arab region, aligning with the principles of SDG 15. The Arab Union, an international non-governmental organization operating under the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the importance of joint Arab action in promoting biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management.

Within the framework of celebrating the Arab Day for Disaster Risk Reduction in 2024, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), in cooperation with the Department of Housing, Water Resources and Disaster Risk Reduction in the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, organized an Arab workshop under the slogan “Arab Infrastructure Resilient and able to face disasters. The celebration will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at 10:00 am, at the Academy’s Abu Qir Campus, Faculty of Pharmacy - Alexandria.

His Excellency Professor Dr. Ismail Abdel Ghaffar Ismail Farag - President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) participated in an international workshop entitled “The Impact of Climate Change on Coastal Cities.” The workshop was held on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at the Library of Alexandria, in the presence of a group of experts and specialists, and a group of academy officials. During the workshop activities, some topics were discussed that will be addressed at the United Nations Ocean Conference scheduled to be held in Nice, France, in 2025. In addition to discussions related to the Academy’s role in change and flexibility in responding to global challenges, the Academy participated in more than 20 funded projects. Internationally.
