Description

This course is designed to expose the student to a broad spectrum of information regarding the use of biological systems and biochemical processes for the production of small and macromolecules of pharmaceutical interest. Starting from simple fermentation processes and ending in preparative gene expression systems, the course will provide the student with the necessary basic background to select, design, and optimize a method for the production of such products. A section of the course is dedicated to discuss the unique formulation aspect of such products in terms of suitability and stability.

  • By the end of the course students will be able to: a. Knowledge and Understanding a.1. Describe the role and types of bioreactors in fermentation technology. a.2. Outline different molecular techniques in biotechnology. a.3. Identify the criteria of ideal expression systems. a.4. List the important examples of biopharmaceuticals that have a medical contribution. a.5. Define the good manufacturing practice (GMP) and Quality Control (QC) criteria in biotechnological industry. b. Intellectual Skills b.1. Appraise the main principles of genetic engineering and recombinant DNA technology. b.2. Distinguish different biotechnological techniques as tools for obtaining beneficial products for further modification and use. b.3. Classify the expression vectors used in biopharmaceutical industry taking its advantages and disadvantages into consideration. c. Professional and Practical Skills c.1. Practice the use of available public bioinformatics search databases to get protein and DNA sequences. c.2. Revise the main principles, concepts and applications of biopharmaceutical industry d. General and Transferable Skills d.1. Implement proficiency in writing, presentation and communication skills. d.2. Practice independent learning needed for continuous professional development.
