Material Culture Conservation

Objectives

  • This course offers an overview of the field of conservation, with a focus on archaeological materials. The course will cover the definition of conservation, its history, ethical issues, materials, and the fundamentals of preventive conservation. Students will learn how to identify materials and learn about their degradation procedure related to the different environmental factors. Students become familiar with conservation issues and the conservation process. The course introduces students to the practice of conservation. It also prepares them for independent interpretation of the structure of a work of art and evaluation of the state of preservation.
