Description

This course aims at providing students with necessary information related to different factors affecting the performance of various drug dosage forms in vitro and in vivo. The course also delivers specialized knowledge that is essential to understand the concept of bioavailability and bioequivalence. The students are exposed to the different mathematical models describing these processes together with the significance of a certain behavior pattern. Several exercises are used to hone the students’ skills in evaluating the exchangeability of a number of alternatives and assessing the impact of the exchange on the patient’s condition.

Objectives

  • By the end of the course students will be able to: a. Knowledge and Understanding a.1. Outline the anatomy and histology of different drug absorption barriers like oral, sublingual, ocular, skin and others with respect to drug absorption. a.2. Identify different biological, physiological and formulation factors that affect drug absorption and interactions through different routes of drug administration. a.3. List advantages and limitations of different routes of drug administration. a.4. Distinguish bioavailability and bioequivalence studies with some FDA approved study design considerations. b. Intellectual Skills b.1. Relate the anatomical barrier structure to mechanisms of drug permeation. b.2. Compare and criticize suitable formulation designs for drug absorption from different routes of drug administration. b.3. Select excipients and formulation designs that better suite drug intended performance. b.4. Select a suitable basis for applying Biowaivers request in registration of a new generic product. c. Professional and Practical Skills c.1. Perform calculations for release profile testing of different formulation designs with relevant calculations. c.2. Apply different methods to judge in vitro performance equivalence. c.3. Compose proper patient advice related to drug administration. d. General and Transferable Skills d.1. Manage use IT for information retrieval and presentation of tasks and activities. d.2. Practice productive working in a team. d.3. Develop proper communication and time management skills.
