Description

This course elaborates on the biochemical basis for interpreting laboratory test results, and provides the essential information used to screen for or diagnose diseases and monitor the effectiveness and safety of therapy. Students are exposed to basic pharmacogenomics information. Reference ranges and critical values are provided. The scientific basis for laboratory tests for kidney, liver and heart , lipid disorders, infectious diseases, cancers and tumor markers, genetic disorders, rheumatic diseases, and others will be discussed.

Objectives

  • I‐Knowledge and understanding: By the end of the course the student should be able to: • Recognize the required clinical Lab tests to identify different disease conditions • Define and differentiate the diseases due to metabolic disorders II‐Intellectual skills: By the end of the course the student should be able to: • Evaluate the results of clinical Lab tests • Determine the fraction excreted unchanged from urinary excretion and calculate renal and hepatic clearance • Estimate creatinine clearance and other calculated lab parameters • Applying problem solving skills and critical thinking to reach proper concerning the diagnosis of certain diseases based on lab tests
