• Recognize the richness and technical diversity of Modern American poets of different sensibilities and periods • Acknowledge the characteristics, aesthetic qualities, themes, forms and styles of American poets. • Review different poetic tastes and genres • State role of a poet in society enacting his self-hood • Respond with reviews written intelligently and analytically • Interpret poetry with enjoyment as poetry is not a prose idea cast into a secret code • Highlight emotional, imaginative and intellectual pleasure of reading a poem • Develop student’s writing skills

Objectives

  • The course aims to provide a wide canvas of American Poetry, as it is a wide-ranging and not all-inclusive course. It will assess the cultural constructs that frame 20th c. American poetry. It is a study of an extended period in the history of American poetry at some depth with selection of salient poets’ works.
